Did you know? A single serving of sardines has 23 grams of protein, omega 3 fatty acids, iron, calcium, potassium, phosphorus, vitamin D and B 12.  There is no doubt sardines are a nutritional powerhouse!  James Villas wrote an article “The unsung sardine” in which he said that “ounce for ounce sardines provide more calcium and phosphorus than milk, more protein than steak, more potassium than bananas, and more iron than cooked spinach.”. Wow!!

The health benefits of sardines are quite remarkable.  Sardines are a rich source of iron which promotes energy and vitality.  Vitamin D and phosphorus are key ingredients supporting bone health, anti inflammatory benefits from omega 3 fatty acids.  Overall, vitamins and minerals in sardines help to improve the ratio between good and bad cholesterol, support cardiovascular and heart health, and boost immune function.

Remember to buy your sardines from sources that canned without freezing and come from clear Moroccan, Portuguese, or Mediterranean waters.

I hope this entices you to want to add a super food like sardines into your diet.  A friend of my mom’s gave me a recipe that has become a family favorite at holidays and everyday gatherings.  Stay tuned for recipes that are not only healthy, but tasty!!!
