COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course focuses on lower body conditions pertaining to Orthopedic and Pain Management Massage.  The goal of this course is to provide the practitioner with in-depth knowledge and understanding of the most common lower body conditions.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Students will become proficient through lecture and hands-on demonstration for the following lower body conditions:

  • Achilles tendinitis
  • Plantar fasciitis/heel pain
  • Inversion ankle sprain/high ankle sprain
  • Shin splints – anterolateral shin splints, anterior compartment syndrome, posterior medial shin splints, stress fracture.
  • Low back pain – sciatica
  • Gastrocnemius strain–tennis leg, most commonly found at the musculotendinous junction of the medial head of the gastrocnemius
  • Hamstring strain
  • IT band friction syndrome

 

LEARNING OUTCOMES

This course will provide lecture and hands-on demonstration in the field of Orthopedic and Pain Management Massage for lower body conditions.  Students will learn a systematic approach to balancing the six major muscle groups.  Students will receive instruction on how to assess active, passive, and resisted range of motion.  They will determine if the problem is a myofascial restriction, trigger point, or strained fibers. Practitioners will develop the skills to determine if the presenting muscle or muscles is due to muscle strain, tight facia, trigger points, or scar tissue.  Practitioners will add these new skills to their massage toolbox to promote therapeutic healing and treatment progress.
